Collected advice from class on 11/5

Use your research to decide on a discussion topic rather than trying to jam your research into an argument it doesn’t fit. Give yourself time to change your mind.

Advice that I would give is to look at articles opposing your view/subject of study. Through this approach you can view what critics oppose and find articles proving why your side is favorable.

Underline and write notes on the article/journal you are reading. If it’s a book you’re borrowing, write notes, page number, and quotes of specific passages. This will make it a little easier to remember what each resource said when it comes time to write the annotated bibliography.

My piece of advice to give to the rest of the class is that when it comes to researching for medieval work is to heavily rely on using the schools article search engine that is implemented. During the research for Medievalist for a semester project, I had the roughest time to find any articles on Google that I can use as bibliography due to the nature of the obscurity of the selected text I chose. But I found the articles I needed within one search of Fitchburg State’s library article search engine.

One piece of advice about research I would give is to always use the library databases to find information because they come directly from Academic Journals and are often more reliable than anything you can simply google. It is also important to talk to people doing the same research topics as you because they may have found valuable resources that you have not.

I cannot stress enough using the librarian. I was never one to seek for her help before this and now I go to her all the time to help find sources.

Stay on top of things! You can never start searching for resources too early, and you can never have too many. Don’t think you can do it all in one big power search either. Plan on multiple trips to the library.

Use the Illiad, but save the articles on your computer after you get them. They are gone from the Illiad after 30 days and they don’t want you requesting the same article again.

Something I found important was keep your mind open; don’t fixate so much on one topic. It’s good to have an understanding of what you’re looking for, but don’t go looking for just that topic. There may be an article that intrigues you, but not on your topic and you dismiss it right away. Stay open minded at first because you might change your topic.

When it comes to research I think what is most important is going through resources that were used within the article that you are reading. Going through these resources will help you see if the article is reliable. As well as if there are many sources within the article that have the same facts then it is almost certain that those facts happened, or at least you have proof to back it up!

I think looking at a lot of sources is important for gathering research. I think looking at the dates the sources were written is also important and something I used to overlook. Credibility is essential as well so make sure you are gathering GOOD research. Sometimes it can difficult to find!!

Schedule plenty o’ time to surf the internet for ideas and search the library.

I would suggest that starting off, that a person selects articles based on a wide range of topics. I heard from someone in class that it was difficult to find more sources because they picked their theme too early. Starting broad will also give the person more ideas, and allow them to get an idea of what the scholarly articles tend to talk about.

The most important piece of advice I have regarding research would definitely be to utilize all of the databases. Always check more than just one for articles because I constantly find different pieces of research on all of the engines.

The most important thing about research is to take your time. Take your time analyzing your text. Take your time considering your sources. Take your time or at least learn to do research well and faster take your time editing.

The greatest piece of advice about research that I would give is to look for sources that have a credible author who has studied the subject for a long period of time (i.e. Tolkein and Anglo-Saxons). Also, some sources can be found within the bibliographies of other sources, it would be wise to do some investigative reading.

Start early, if you get a good topic or at least one you are interested in start researching as soon as possible. That way you can change ideas around without any setbacks and you get the chance to really absorb information.

My most important piece of advice I would give to the rest of the class would be to start the research EARLY! With this assignment I have so many links to go on for my paper. This makes it tremendously a lot easier. I’m usually one of those students to find research a night or two before.

Im not sure what is the most important advice for doing research. However, I think the most important part about starting your research is to focus on one topic, you need to start out broad. By that, I mean search everything. Take articles and books on your topic. Look at them to learn a little bit about your subject. By doing this, you can “toss” articles/info that is not of particular use to you. This is how you can focus on a topic.
